Glamping

What image comes to mind when you hear the word "tent"? Summer camp or African safari? A fort made with couch cushions or a honeymoon in Bali? Native American tepee or cabana at a beach club? No matter what type of tent you envision, summer is the perfect time to enjoy nature in a less-structured way . . .

"Just a 30-minute drive from Missoula, the getaway is set on 37,000 acres of unspoiled wilderness. Accommodation options are as expansive as Montana's much-celebrated big sky. The luxe tents (six in all) of the resort's River Camp perch along the Blackfoot River. . . .  'We wanted these tents to feel luxurious and very comfortable,' says [owner Nadine Lipson], 'and to fit with the environment - the majesty of the river, the color of the rocks and timber - not fight with it.' "Until a permanent house can be built, Glen Lajeski and Gerry Etcheverry erected a trio of tent cabins - fabric walls stretched across wooden frames. . . . 'You're living with nature much more closely than if you were living in a house,' observes Lajeski, who enjoys snuggling under his Frette sheets while acorns assault the roof and frogs serenade him to sleep."

A Whiter Shade of Pale

Do you wear white before Memorial Day? In honor of everyone who obeys the "no white after Labor Day" rule as well as those who choose to break it, I offer a whiter shade of pale . . .

Designer Smith Hanes "turned a negative into a fresh, beautiful positive: he broke up the long hallway leading to the master suite by adding a row of ethereal white portieres. Bedside tables are vintage John Dickinson."
