Hanging Around: Swings For Inside and Out

Mr. Zuckerman had the best swing in the country. It was a single long piece of heavy rope tied to the beam over the north doorway [of the barn]. At the bottom of the rope was a fat knot to sit on. . . . You climbed a ladder to the hayloft. Then, holding the rope, you stood at the edge and looked down, and were scared and dizzy. . . . Then you got up all your nerve, took a deep breath, and jumped.
E.B. White, Charlotte's Web

The pictures below indicate that you are never too old to enjoy a swing, and you can even hang a swing indoors. Made of wicker, rattan, reclaimed wood, or even an antique door, swings offer a wonderful place to relax. I have included a few pictures of hammocks, too. Enjoy!

"[Cobblestone-like] pavers for the porch and patio floors from Belgard complement the cottage styling of the house. The swing bed was a must-have, the designers enthuse. Handmade by a local carpenter, the swing was built with reclaimed wood from an 1800s barn. The mattress is covered with indoor-outdoor fabric edged in super-sized piping, giving it an old-fashioned look."

Outdoor Showers and Baths

Some outdoor showers are purely practical places to rinse off sand after a day at the beach. Others offer the rarefied opportunity to bathe while watching wild animals of Africa splashing about in their watering holes. An al fresco bathtub can provide a sybaritic experience or, as in the case of musician John Legend, a convenient spot to wash the dogs. Whether you choose stone or ipe wood, Dornbracht fixtures or a garden hose, there are many ways to create a private area in which to cool off and enjoy nature. For inspiration, take a peek . . .

"With privacy from a bamboo hedge and a lattice fence, designers Tom Flynn and Joseph D'Urso created an exotic and stylish outdoor shower in East Hampton, New York. It's equipped with a powerful rain showerhead - the ultimate way to cool off after a day at the beach."

"Nothing is more refreshing than a shower al fresco, and this special place requires special attention. Create a walled garden feel or bring the indoors out and make the outdoor shower a true extension of the bathroom."

Murano Glass and Summertime

Many years ago I watched a movie called Summertime, which was directed by David Lean in 1955 and starred Katherine Hepburn as a lonely American traveling in Italy. Ms. Hepburn's character buys a red Venetian glass goblet from an antiques dealer who then pursues her romantically. (Movie clip from Turner Classic Movies.) This movie was my introduction to Murano glass - glass that is made on the Venetian island of Murano. In honor of Summertime - both the season and the film, I share some photos of Murano glass . . .

"In the dining room, armchairs from a local flea market surround a Saarinen table painted in Farrow and Ball's Down Pipe; the Murano-glass chandelier is antique, the Neapolitan console is circa 1850, and the plates are by Fornasetti."
