Houston designer Pamela Pierce recommends old casement doors and windows with thin mullions: "This is a style that they often used in the 20s when they built houses. I like the appearance of old steel casement doors and windows with thin mullions because it adds character and increases light in the space. I have them custom made and use them as often as possible. They work in a variety of projects from a beach house in Manhattan Beach and hacienda in El Paso to a French-style house in Houston."

"When we gutted the original kitchen, we lifted the ceiling, pushed the walls out, and added a huge steel window with French doors. You look out on a garden with lavender, roses, and citrus trees. That's where all the color is. When you cut some flowers and bring them in, the color happens organically."

"No curtains required in the master bedroom. The garden screens the room from view. Brinson added steel testers, to raise the bed height, and designed adjustable clip-on reading lights. Bed curtains are in Les Indiennes' Indian Flower. 'I think simple nature-based patterns are the most restful.' The duvet is protected with a no-frills vintage French sheet. 'Sometimes we have three dogs watching TV with us - I have to be able to launder easily.' "
