In With the New

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On March 12th, I wrote a <a href="http://aflippenlife.blogspot.com/2015/03/katies-house-and-hotel.html" target="_blank">post</a> about <a href="http://quirkgallery.com/" target="_blank">Quirk</a> director Katie Ukrop's house, which was featured in the August 2008 edition of <i>Domino</i>. This evening I found some photos online that seem to indicate that Richmond, Virginia, interior designer <a href="http://suellengregory.com/" target="_blank">Suellen Gregory</a> has updated the Ukrop home. The interiors still have a lot of pink touches, but the walls have been painted gray. What do you think?</span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx-7I2ZoJ-_pzw9OHNElIxJhgBtASEEjCi-momd7b7AB_ay_oFkds6OOK8iCX6eg9N3PpiGzuqk-RPvdITZ60miPnh6LMjBqjhWktnn3rpv1W_o3a5LYyHvRnySFtdDWLTNm09NenrNb4/s1600/63a2241d3aaf8f3746934943bb077092.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; John Saladino: The Art of the Edit

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The work of John Saladino reminds me of a quote from Ernest Hemingway: "If a writer knows enough about what he is writing about, he may omit things that he knows." In design, what you leave out is as important as what you leave in. John Saladino describes his interiors as "still lifes," which he creates by carefully considering space, color, and shapes. His use of old materials gives rooms a feeling of permanence, but he interprets traditional techniques in a modern way. Take a look . . . </span><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXc18gp7krGRXET-sR0kj7oWSrHbSRx-aiaPliXteDqZ183tu8uK4-seeQeJhK6mbVmq-IE6ReqbEQe2q6BairpIQTCMu9rCBuCvltALMw7lmxKSLUsyLiU-eScpvHHXZZtViU106daUo/s1600/01_DS_Interiors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXc18gp7krGRXET-sR0kj7oWSrHbSRx-aiaPliXteDqZ183tu8uK4-seeQeJhK6mbVmq-IE6ReqbEQe2q6BairpIQTCMu9rCBuCvltALMw7lmxKSLUsyLiU-eScpvHHXZZtViU106daUo/s1600/01_DS_Interiors.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Interior design by John Saladino.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Image and text via <a href="http://saladinostyle.com/design-services/interiors/" target="_blank">website</a> of John Saladino.</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWIXtUkr8nczjlSlrHBAb2TSJYF_qMljwLocvLMmVllJEk1derN99l-XUTJkl_vkyFkbEJjuB-8T1xSPaULxRWOOWDLwYD1isySNI9HTmxzuLt6_wZZFL9JcvCZZfgATB453NdkVw8SiQ/s1600/540f5be128b16_-_ver-saladino-entryway-msc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWIXtUkr8nczjlSlrHBAb2TSJYF_qMljwLocvLMmVllJEk1derN99l-XUTJkl_vkyFkbEJjuB-8T1xSPaULxRWOOWDLwYD1isySNI9HTmxzuLt6_wZZFL9JcvCZZfgATB453NdkVw8SiQ/s1600/540f5be128b16_-_ver-saladino-entryway-msc.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"Silver Travertine: Honed, Unfilled and Installed Horizontally. Plaster walls come in a distinctive range of tender hues (bone, apricot, periwinkle), mottled as if centuries old—evidence of the passion for timeless textures that has been part of his philosophy since the 1960s. The New York City designer says he approaches a room artistically, seeing its contents as a series of geometric shapes to be gathered into a serenely balanced composition he calls 'a walk-in still life.' One of Saladino’s leitmotifs is monochromatic upholstery lushly quilted into channels, diamonds, or grids.
