One of my frequently re-pinned images on Pinterest is a photo of a study area closed off by glass and steel sliding doors:

"Sliding glass-and-steel echo the windows and close off the study area. An Aeron chair stands at each workstation."
Interior design by Sally Markham.

House Beautiful (December 2006).

Sally Markham created the space in this popular pin, and many other designers - Pamela Pierce, Madeline Stuart, Bobby McAlpine, and Alexandra and Michael Misczynki of Atelier Am - use steel and glass windows and doors in their projects. These portals can unify the interior and exterior of a home - inviting the outside in with a simple, yet elegant frame. They work in a variety of residences - from a mountain home in North Carolina to elegant historic manors in Houston and Chicago to the sprawling eco-friendly compound a celebrity couple created in Los Angeles. Take a look at these examples . . .

Here are some before-and-after photos of work by interior designer Madeline Stuart. The steel-and-glass doors transform an ordinary space and draw the eye toward the verdant landscape outside . . .

Houston designer Pamela Pierce recommends old casement doors and windows with thin mullions: "This is a style that they often used in the 20s when they built houses. I like the appearance of old steel casement doors and windows with thin mullions because it adds character and increases light in the space. I have them custom made and use them as often as possible. They work in a variety of projects from a beach house in Manhattan Beach and hacienda in El Paso to a French-style house in Houston."

"When we gutted the original kitchen, we lifted the ceiling, pushed the walls out, and added a huge steel window with French doors. You look out on a garden with lavender, roses, and citrus trees. That's where all the color is. When you cut some flowers and bring them in, the color happens organically."

"Brinson replaced a tile top on the Martha Stewart table with Georgia marble: 'Honed white marble makes it look like it's salvaged from some great patisserie in France. At least I can pretend. But the showstopper in my kitchen is the 14-foot-high arched steel window and door. The drama is big in here.' "
