"In a Manhattan apartment decorated by Phoebe Howard, study walls painted Benjamin Moore's Newburyport Blue set off a striking Civil War-era flag from Jeff Bridgman Antiques. The sofa is covered in Rogers & Goffigon's Cervo; the ottoman is in Colefax and Fowler's Lanark Plaid. Leather Antwerp chair, Bobo Intriguing Objects. Throw, Alicia Adams Alpaca."

"In the living room of a Washington, D.C., town house, designers Hillary Thomas and Jeff Lincoln reference two William Haines signatures — the elegant but informal game table and tufted chairs. Lucite table and leather chairs, Kendall Wilkinson."

"Curtains in Kathryn M. Ireland's Marrakech inspired the living room palette. For a custom look, [designer Lindsey Coral] Harper glued blue grosgrain ribbons onto pleated lampshades; for a modern look, she painted the fireplace surround crisp white. The encaustic painting is by Mel Rea. 'It's wax, so I hope it doesn't melt,' Harper says. The bench is covered in Aqua Velvet in Marine from Holly Hunt."

"The living room of the Manhattan apartment of Valerie Colas-Thibouville and her family; the home was renovated by Dick Bories and James Shearron and decorated by Miles Redd. The custom-made sofa and throw pillows are covered in a Clarence House linen and velvet, respectively, the Oushak rug is antique, and the Louis XVI-style bergère is from Todd Alexander Romano; the porcelain vase, Chinese table lamp, and antique cocktail table are all from John Rosselli Antiques and Decorations. The trio of artworks is by Jean-Louis Forain, the window treatments are of a Kravet silk with Lee Jofa silk trim, and the walls are sheathed in red felt."

"You can paint small spaces dark colors. Deep tones absorb the light, decreasing shadows so that the space appears seamless and therefore larger. A dark color on the ceiling makes it recede into the night. Woven rush 'blocks' beside each bed serve as secondary surfaces for magazines and books. These can also slide under the bed to get out of the way. Throwing an unexpected hue into a clichéd color scheme can create just the right sense of familiar-yet-fresh. Red, white, blue, and...brown! Yellow? Pink? Why not!"

"The living room of Liza Pulitzer Calhoun's home in Palm Beach, Florida, sports upholstery in a rich grape color and eye-catching patterns. Perennials' indoor-outdoor Canvas Weave on the furniture is durable enough to hold up to Calhoun's three dogs and wet swimsuits. A vaulted ceiling of cypress treated with a lime-acid wash creates a loftlike look, while rattan furniture from Palecek's Presidents Collection imparts a natural tone. 'The room has a relaxed island feel — less Palm Beach, more Bahamas or Jamaica,' she says. Pillows in Roberta Roller Rabbit fabrics."

The bedside table is from Cappellini Modern Age, and the table lamps are by Philippe Starck for Flos."
