October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it seems like an appropriate time to think pink . . .

"The lavish fun begins just beyond the front door, where a not-so-big great room had to contain a foyer as well as living and dining areas. Sommers gave the entry wall impact by cladding it in antiqued mirror panels and mounting Meredith's grandmother's Maison Baguès crystal sconces over a seam, with a goatskin-sheathed console table below. Vintage chairs, Grand Mere, in Manuel Canovas fabric. Antique Baguès sconces."

"Casting for Recovery (CFR) now hosts forty-two weekend fly fishing retreats [for women recovering from breast cancer] each year in thirty-five states, including Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, and Virginia, reaching 600 women annually. . . [A]ll of the retreats are entirely free, and available to women in any stage of their breast cancer fight—years into remission, in the heart of the battle, or just recently diagnosed. Fourteen women are selected by lottery for each two-and-a-half day trip, by region."

"The manicured gardens and stately halls of Chatsworth House, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, just got a little irreverent. This season, Irish artist Michael Craig-Martin has installed a new set of sculptures on the manor grounds, simple steel works that trace the outlines of objects like discarded umbrellas, a wheelbarrow, and gardening tools. While the objects themselves may be ordinary, their form and scale are anything but. A high-heeled shoe looms large over the immaculate south lawn, brazenly neon and playful against the flawless landscaping."

"The Adam Room, which serves as the McSwaneys’ drawing room, is distinguished by 16-foot columns and intricate plasterwork. Mark Gillette designed the Claremont-fabric window treatments to match the dusky pink he used on the ceiling. The sofas are also by Gillette: The one at left, upholstered in a Brunschwig and Fils damask, is placed next to a Vaughan floor lamp, while the other is flanked by Vaughan lamps on Soane Britain side tables."

"The centerpiece of the four-story residence—and the first area one enters—is the Adam Room . . . . Neoclassical columns rise 16 feet to an ornate plasterwork ceiling in the style of 18th-century Scottish architect Robert Adam, giving the room its name.
Gillette’s immediate priority was to rethink the existing color scheme . . . : 'The decoration was basically white and gray, and the ceiling was gilded. I wanted to impart a sense of Adam and Wedgwood, so I came up with a palette of blues and pinks.' The columns were given a faux-porphyry finish, making them 'much more architectural and strong,' Gillette notes. 'With a room of this scale you have to be bold with certain elements.' He also laid a new oak floor."

"David Shrigley’s drawings line the walls of the Gallery, a casual eatery at London’s Sketch complex. . . . Paris-based designer India Mahdavi refreshed the space, giving it a zippy chevron-pattern floor and a monochromatic color scheme, with the walls, ceiling, and sumptuous velvet seating done in a delicious dusty pink. Says Mahdavi, 'I wanted to create a soft, happy, and welcoming environment to contrast with David’s satirical artwork.' ”

"ED: What factors did you consider when choosing the paint color?
EBW: Since the color is so strong . . . I made sure that the other elements in the room would help balance it by being light or reflective. For example, the yellow Fortuny fabric on the drapery is of a much lighter weight; the tabletop, although dark, is a high-gloss lacquer and therefore reflective. Same for the mirrored back wall."

"Striped wallpaper adds a feminine touch. Homeowner Alison Booth doesn't shy away from color, and her conveniently-located second-floor laundry room is no exception. Strong colors and graphic patterns balance each other and add interest. For a bold wallpaper like this, keep cabinets and flooring in neutral or white."

"The best way to de-petal a rose without bruising or ripping them is to hold the stem still and gently twist the rose head away from you.
For a fabulous bath, place the petals in a tub filled with warm water and rose bath oil (try this one from Jo Malone), which is naturally hydrating and will make your skin feel extra-soft. The gorgeous flowers will instantly lighten your mood!" - Jessica Marshall, owner of Miss Daisy Floral Design Studio in Las Vegas and NYC.

"If you love the look of bold magenta but are hesitant to commit to such a strong color, try a muted version. The shade used here balances the softness of a pastel with the saturation of a jewel tone. With a slightly brown undertone, the dusty magenta on the pillows, seat cushion, and lamps adds just the right dose of subtle color to a restrained and elegant room."
