Michelle Stewart's White Christmas

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Michelle Stewart is a Houston designer whose elegant home - decorated for Christmas - was featured in <i>Southern Accents</i> in 2005. The house's pale furnishings are beautiful, yet family-friendly. Washable canvas slipcovers and sea grass rugs accommodate pets and spills. Michelle uses silk, but only on pillows, which she replaces every year, and on curtains. Her home features antiques, but they are juxtaposed with modern touches like the pear still life over the family room fireplace and the orange still life in the dining room. In a twist on traditional studies of fruit, these two paintings portray their subjects in an unexpected, larger-than-life manner. Michelle's holiday touches - from the sand dollars adorning a miniature Christmas tree to the arrangement of kumquats, crystals, roses and peonies in the dining room - are inspired uses of nature. Juxtapositions

I love these interiors because of the juxtapositions: crystal chandeliers with wood-beam ceilings, an antique stone torso atop a Lucite pedestal, fine silks with rough seashells, limestone with jeweled tiaras. Juxtapositions add life to a space.
