Butler's pantry:
A small storage and serving space between the kitchen and the dining room
The butler's pantry is coming out of hiding. No longer just a place to store the china, this space can be a stylish spot for serving coffee or mixing drinks. Like the powder room, a butler's pantry can become a little jewel box - adorned with wallpaper or a brilliant color than would be overwhelming in a larger or more public room. Homeowners who entertain frequently might want to add wine chillers, refrigerating drawers, ice machines, or extra dishwashers to their pantries to make party prep and clean-up a breeze.
"This butler's pantry gets an extra punch with the trim, walls, and ceiling all saturated in a single hue."

"The Ditomassos, who frequently entertain, wanted the butler's pantry to equal the glamour of the rest of the home. Vaulted ceilings shine with a silver leaf finish [by DesignRed Decorative Painting], and white built-in cabinets house the homeowners' collection of porcelain serving pieces."

"At his Chicago showroom, Mick [de Guilio] created this classic pantry with maple countertops, a polished nickel sink and top, and lots of glass-fronted doors and then tweaked it with modern cabinets and a fancy crystal chandelier, both of which were not standard fare in butler's pantries of yore - nor was the motorized lift in the backsplash."

"A large prep area in the butler's pantry has its own sink and window with a view. The color palette and nautical theme from the kitchen carries into the pantry for a cohesive look. And all the decorative touches bring a finished look to the pantry."

" ' When my husband and I designed our vacation house in the Dominican Republic, I was able to build what was, for me, a dream come true - a china room. It's about 13 feet wide by 16 feet long, and the cabinets have sliding glass doors and are lit from the inside. We love to entertain, and setting a table is so much easier when you can see everything! With that island in the middle, I take things out and experiment. Wouldn't this green leaf plate look great with those purple glasses?' " - BUNNY WILLIAMS

" 'A lot of people think they want huge kitchens, so when they renovate an old house, they incorporate the butler's pantry into the kitchen. It's such a mistake! You give up this wonderful storage area that can also be charming. I have a motley collection - old French Creil plates, English ironstone, red, white and blue Meissen, William Yeoward crystal, jelly glasses. People love to just wander in and stare.'
