The Houses That Inspired The Great Gatsby

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As many of you know, the 2013 film <i>The Great Gatsby</i> (see film trailer <a href="http://oscar.go.com/nominees/production-design/the-great-gatsby" target="_blank">here</a>) won Oscars for "Achievement in Costume Design" and "Achievement in Production Design" last Sunday night. I won't use this space to compare the latest adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's tale with the 1974 film that featured Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Instead, I will look at the actual estates that provided inspiration for both Fitzgerald and Baz Luhrmann, director of the 2013 movie.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Some scholars believe that Beacon Towers in </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">Sands Point, New York - a fantastical estate built in 1917 and 1918 for Alva Belmont, </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: center;">the ex-wife of William Kissam Vanderbilt and widow of Oliver Belmont, </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">inspired F.
