The second Monday of October is a federal holiday in the United States to celebrate Christopher Columbus, the explorer (believed to have been born in Genoa) who arrived in the New World - the Americas - in 1492. Columbus left Spain in search of a new trade route to Japan but instead landed on an island in the Bahamas. He named this place San Salvador. Columbus received credit for being the first European to discover the Americas, although the Norseman Leif Ericson actually arrived in North America almost 500 years before the Genoese navigator. In celebration of  Columbus and all sea travelers, I share some images of sailors, ships and maps . . .

" 'My universal equinoctial ring dial is English and dates from about 1730. Essentially, it's a type of sundial that allows you to tell the time wherever you are in the world, as long as the sun is shining. It was cutting-edge technology at the time, and these were important navigational tools for sailors. I've set it and seen it work, but I don't have all the technical know-how to really use it properly. I bought it because it's beautiful - a combination of art, science, and mathematics,' " said by designer David Easton.
