The Academy Awards may be an evening of red carpets, haute couture gowns, and tearful speeches but, behind the scenes, interior design plays a crucial role. Since 2003, Architectural Digest, has sponsored the event’s admired Greenroom, a spacious backstage retreat where superstars can relax, gather their thoughts, mingle, and perhaps refine their thank-yous. (Architectural Digest)
The 2015 Oscars has been designed by the L.A. design firm Commune with the help of actress Julianne Moore. Take a look . . .
A rendering of the 2015 Oscars greenroom.
"This year’s Oscar greenroom—the 13th created in partnership with Architectural Digest—was created by . . . design firm, Commune. Employing a distinctly midcentury aesthetic, the designers fashioned the space to bring to mind the iconic modern homes of L.A.’s Mulholland Drive. Sleek furnishings and stylish textiles . . . lush foliage, and rich textures will ornament the room, which is set to 'fully represent the best of California living,' says Commune cofounder Roman Alonso.
Best Actress nominee Julianne Moore . . . has lent her eye . . . to the room’s decor . . . [to] help make the space a true oasis amid the craziness of the evening, as Moore says she 'knows what it’s like to be backstage on Oscar night.' ”

"Created by the L.A. design studio Commune, with assistance from actress Julianne Moore, the Architectural Digest Oscar Greenroom is floored with Antium brushed limestone tile by Walker Zanger. The tile complements brick walls painted in a Sherwin-Williams Emerald interior acrylic latex in alabaster and neutral Shepperton and Neves carpets from Stark. Furnishings include seating by Holly Hunt, including a Holly Hunt Studio Haka director’s chair and Christian Astuguevieille Ilorg armchair. A Samsung Galaxy Tab S tablet lies on a Holly Hunt Caste Bridger bronze table. A custom-designed banquette lining the main wall is upholstered in a Clarence House fabric and accented with pillows in velvets and velours."

As noted above, Commune's 2015 Oscars Greenroom offers "a nod to the iconic designs of the 1950s and ’60s." Here is a look at Commune's work on a midcentury Buff and Hensman house in Los Angeles's Nichols Canyon:
"Entrepreneur Derek Mattison envisioned 'a stylish villain's lair' when he bought this 1960s Los Angeles home by architects Buff and Hensman."

"Reclaimed-oak paneling gives the double-height living room a rustic air; a dark custom-blended Benjamin Moore color on the beams and trim lends contrast. The floor lamp on the far left was custom made by Downtown, and the cocktail table is by Alma Allen for Commune. A Vladimir Kagan Contour chaise from Ralph Pucci International is upholstered in gray cashmere, and the overscale floor lamp is by Bottega Veneta; the cowhide rug is from Blackman Cruz."

Commune completed a commercial commission for Derek Mattison, as well. The design firm created his menswear boutique, Mattison, that is located on Melrose Place.
"In terms of high-end fashion addresses, Melrose Place is separated from Savile Row and Avenue Montaigne as much by sensibility as by physical distance—Los Angeles is, after all, a city where board shorts and flip-flops still constitute a legitimate interpretation of 'business casual.' Los Angeles–based entrepreneur turned menswear designer Derek Mattison is looking to change all that. His new boutique, Mattison, strikes a blow for fine tailoring and serious haberdashery in the laid-back land of endless summer."

"The dressing area features a working fireplace.
In practical terms, that spirit is expressed in brass walls, minimalist display fixtures that riff on Mattison’s logo, and bespoke hanging planters of Hindu rope that add an organic flourish to the pristine aesthetic. At the back of the shop, a private dressing room outfitted with antiqued mirrors and a Royère-style sofa allows customers to try on the apparel in a comfortable, residence-like setting as handsome and refined as any Mattison blazer."
